Geneva Flag

Half an eagle and a key: the flag of Geneva

The flag of Geneva is divided into two vertical halves. On the left, on yellow, half a black eagle with a crown and red beak and claws; on the right, on red, an upright golden key, its bit turned outward. Two halves that meet in the centre, as if the eagle and the key had been cut and sewn together. And that is exactly how it was born.

Written into the Constitution

The Constitution of the Republic and Canton of Geneva, in article 7, describes the arms as the fusion of the black eagle with crowned head on a yellow ground and the golden key on a red ground. Above the shield the full arms carry a crest with a rising sun and the trigram IHS, and the same article sets the canton's motto: «Post tenebras lux», after darkness, light. On the flag the shield remains, with the eagle and the key.

The eagle of the Empire and the key of Saint Peter

The two halves tell of two powers. The eagle is that of the Holy Roman Empire; the key is one of the two keys of Saint Peter, patron of Geneva's cathedral. The old flag of the bishopric of Geneva had two golden keys on red. Since at least the 15th century the imperial eagle has been set beside the key, hiding one key and half the eagle: a single shield to join the Empire, to which Geneva belonged, and the bishop, from whom the citizens held their franchises.

Post tenebras lux

The sun had been a symbol of Geneva from the earliest times; the motto «Post tenebras lux» was added with the Reformation, the Geneva of John Calvin, who settled there in 1541. In December 1602 the city withstood the Escalade, the night assault by Savoyard troops: Geneva still remembers it every year with a historical procession, a popular race and the figure of Mère Royaume, famous for throwing objects at the attackers.

The twenty-second canton

Geneva joined the Confederation in 1815, as the twenty-second canton. With its entry Switzerland took the shape it still has today. The canton also has an official anthem, «Cé qu'è lainô», in Genevan Arpitan. And the yellow and red flag, with the eagle and the key, flies on the 1st of August beside the Swiss cross.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Geneva or with roots there, for those living far away who want it in the window, for a commune, a school or a club, for the Escalade celebrations in December, for Swiss associations abroad, for the 1st of August national day, for fans of Geneva's teams, for a hotel, a lakeside restaurant or a shop of Genevan products, for visitors to Calvin's city. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
