Description

City of Turin Flag

Blue, with the white cross and the golden bulls: the Turin flag

The Turin flag is blue, with a thin yellow border, crossed by a white cross. In each of the four quarters is a golden bull, the same as on the city's coat of arms. In the first quarter a scroll carries the motto «Auxilium meum a Domino», my help comes from God, and in the lower corner appears a date every Turinese knows: 1706.

Written in the Statute

Turin has written its flag into the Statute of the Comune. Article 4 says it in one sentence: «The flag of the Comune of Turin is the historical flag of the siege of 1706». On official occasions the Palazzo Civico flies the flag of the City together with those of Piedmont, the Italian tricolour and the European flag.

The siege of 1706

On 13 May 1706, during the War of the Spanish Succession, the French laid siege to Turin. The defence was fierce, and it was then that Pietro Micca performed his heroic act. After three months the city was still holding out; on 7 September the imperial troops of Eugene of Savoy and the Piedmontese troops of Victor Amadeus II attacked, put the enemy to flight and entered the city. Today's flag is a faithful replica of the standard of the city militia that defended Turin in those months.

The bull, a canting emblem

Turin's coat of arms is blue, with a rampant golden bull: a figure chosen for its likeness to the city's name, what heralds call canting arms. The bull first appears in 1325, on a seal on the Book of Communal Ordinances, while the blue and gold colours were fixed only in 1619.

From the city guards' standard to the city's flag

On 31 May 1928 the flag of 1706 was adopted by the city guards. On 6 September 1941 it was chosen to represent Turin at the Vittoriale and, after the war, came into use as the civic flag of the Palazzo. Today it is often seen around the city, and not only at ceremonies.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Turin or has roots there, for families who emigrated and Piedmontese associations around the world, for the Comune, the city districts and schools, for those who remember the siege of 1706 and its re-enactments, for fans of Turin's teams, for a historic café, a pastry shop or a shop selling Piedmontese products, for anyone who has visited the city and wants to take a memory home. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
