City of Rome Flag

Purple and gold with the SPQR arms: the Rome flag

The flag of Rome is split into two vertical halves, purple red at the pole and golden yellow at the fly, with the city's emblem in the centre: the purple shield with the cross and the gold letters SPQR, under a crown. It is the flag Romans recognise at first glance, the colours of the Capital.

The emblem of Roma Capitale

The Statute of Roma Capitale describes the emblem precisely: a pointed shield of purple colour, with a gold Greek cross at the top, followed by the gold capital letters S. P. Q. R. set diagonally and stepped, and above it a crown of eight gold florets, five of them visible. On the flag the shield sits right on the line between the two colours, like a seal.

Four letters, two thousand years

SPQR is an abbreviation that has been read on the stones of Rome for centuries. In Latin inscriptions it stood for the Roman people as a political community, and it was understood as «Senatus PopulusQue Romanus», the Senate and the Roman People. It came back into use in the Middle Ages, on the coins of the Roman senate of the 12th century, and today it is the heart of the Comune's coat of arms. Few cities in the world can put such a long history on their flag.

Purple and gold

Purple and gold are the colours of Rome. Purple is the colour of the shield set by the Statute, gold that of the cross, the letters and the crown. The flag spreads them across the cloth in two large fields, and flag scholars have seen it flying on the Campidoglio, seat of the city government, beside the Italian tricolour and the European flag.

21 April, the Birthday of Rome

The Statute of Roma Capitale sets a date: on 21 April Rome celebrates the Natale di Roma, the anniversary of its founding. It is the day the city celebrates itself, the right day to hang out the purple and gold, as on every occasion when Rome comes together.

Who chooses it

For anyone Roman by birth or by choice, for Romans who live far away and want it close, for Roma Capitale, the Municipi and their offices, for schools, for those celebrating the Natale di Roma, for fans of Roma, for a trattoria, a bakery, a shop of Lazio products, for the many tourists who want to take home a piece of the Eternal City. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.

The flags are very well made and immediately give the impression of being a high-quality product. It remains to be seen how the fabric and colours will hold up once...

Le bandiere sono molto ben rifinite e trasmettono una immediata sensazione di prodotto di qualità. Ora bisognerà vedere come si comporteranno tessuti e colori una volta esposti agli agenti atmosferici.
