Municipality of Modena Flag

Yellow and blue: the Modena flag

The flag of Modena is split into two vertical halves, yellow at the pole and blue at the fly. These are the colours of Modena, the yellow and blue that the people of Modena recognise everywhere: in the coat of arms, in the gonfalone, in squares on festival days.

Azure and gold

In the language of heraldry Modena's colours are called azure and gold. The Comune's coat of arms is a gold shield with an azure cross, and the Comune itself tells it this way: the azure cross on a gold field, today yellow and blue, has been the city's coat of arms since the 12th century. Yellow and blue, the Comune writes, have coloured the city's history like an identity card of very ancient origin.

A cross born with the Comuni

The azure cross on gold was adopted following the example of the cities that took part in the Lombard League, the alliance of the northern Comuni against the emperor. The first image of it that survives is illuminated in the city Statutes of 1327, where Saint Geminianus, the patron bishop, appears on horseback with the azure cross embroidered on his vestments and on his horse's caparison.

The augers and the motto

In the 16th century two crossed augers joined the cross, and then, from 1599, the Latin motto «Avia Pervia», meaning «remote things become reachable». The augers may recall the digging of wells, or the civic virtues of the city: scholars do not agree. In 1740 Duke Francesco III d'Este granted the crown above the shield. The flag leaves all this aside and keeps only the two colours.

31 January, Saint Geminianus

The day Modena recognises itself most is 31 January, the feast of the patron Saint Geminianus. The authorities walk in procession from the Town Hall to the Cathedral carrying votive candles and the oil for the lamp that always burns before the saint's tomb, and the historic centre fills with the fair between Piazza Grande and Via Emilia. It is the perfect day for yellow and blue at the windows.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Modena or with roots in the city and its province, for emigrated families who want a piece of home, for the Comune and its offices, for schools, for those who go to the San Geminiano fair, for fans of Modena's yellow and blue teams, for an osteria, a balsamic vinegar maker, a charcuterie or a shop of Modena products, for the tourist who wants a memory of Piazza Grande. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
