Description

Municipality of Grosseto Flag

The silver griffin on red: the flag of Grosseto

The flag of Grosseto is red, with the city's coat of arms in the centre: a red shield with the silver griffin gripping a sword, topped by the crown. It is the design of the Comune's gonfalone carried onto a flag: the symbol that, in the Comune's own words, represents the history and identity of the city.

The griffin coat of arms

The blazon of the arms reads: «Di rosso al grifo d'argento, impugnante con la branca destra anteriore una spada dello stesso, posta in palo». In plain words: a silver griffin on a red field, holding with its right front paw an upright sword, also silver. The coat of arms was recognised by a decree of the Head of Government of 22 June 1928.

An Etruscan and Christian griffin

At first the arms consisted of the griffin alone, the winged animal of myth. It recalled the origins of the people of Grosseto, linked to the Etruscans who from the seventh century BC lived in ancient Roselle, and later it also became a symbol of the power of Christ. Then the griffin was placed on a red field, the colour of the Ghibelline party.

The sword and the legend of 1328

The sword in the griffin's paws came last. According to a legend the griffin was armed in 1328, in memory of the siege of the city by the troops of Louis the Bavarian and the antipope Nicholas V. A fine story, but just that: a legend.

The red gonfalone

The Comune's gonfalone is a red cloth with the city's coat of arms in the centre. On 11 July 2024 the mayor and the president of the city council handed the commander of the Municipal Police a new gonfalone, embroidered on shiny red fabric, and the old cloth was placed in a display case in the council chamber. At official ceremonies the gonfalone always goes out escorted by the Municipal Police. The flag takes up its red field and coat of arms.
