Description

Municipality of Cuneo Flag

Red and white bands: the flag of Cuneo

The flag of Cuneo is made of five horizontal bands, alternating red and white, with red at the top and bottom. These are the colours of the lower part of the city's coat of arms, which heraldry calls «fasciato d'argento e di rosso», barry of silver and red. A flag that needs no figures: the bands alone say Cuneo.

The coat of arms of Emanuel Philibert

Cuneo's coat of arms was granted to the city by Duke Emanuel Philibert of Savoy on 31 January 1559 and recognised by the Head of Government on 28 January 1936. In its upper part it gathers the insignia of the House of Savoy, with Westphalia, Saxony, Chablais and Aosta, and in the centre the Savoy silver cross on red. In the lower part, the bands of silver and red: the city's own sign, which the flag carries on its own.

«Ferendo»

Above the crown of the arms runs a ribbon with a one-word Latin motto: «Ferendo», by enduring. The Comune's own Statute recalls the seven (or more) sieges the city withstood between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, and asks that they be read as an expression of collective pride rather than of warlike spirit. Two palms, at the sides, frame the shield.

A city born free

In June 1198 Cuneo already appears as a constituted Comune. A fresco in the town hall shows men gathering around the chapel of Our Lady of the Wood to found the new town, rebelling against feudal claims. After its rebirth in 1231, the city gave itself its Statutes, of which the manuscript code of 1380 survives, and in 1382 it placed itself under the Savoy. Freedom, says today's Statute, is one of the keys to reading its history.

Gold medal and Saint Michael

Cuneo's gonfalone bears the gold medal for military valour for the merits of the Resistance, conferred on 1 August 1947. The city bears the title of city granted by Emanuel Philibert with a diploma of 31 January 1559, and every 29 September it celebrates its patron saint, Saint Michael the Archangel.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Cuneo or has roots in the «Granda», for families who emigrated and Piedmontese associations around the world, for the Comune, the city's schools and associations, for the feast of Saint Michael and the city's events, for fans of Cuneo's teams, for a pastry shop, a restaurant or a shop selling Cuneo products, for anyone who has discovered Cuneo and wants to take a memory home. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
