Municipality of Cagliari Flag

Blue and red: the flag of Cagliari

The flag of Cagliari we sew is divided into two vertical halves, blue next to the pole and red at the fly. No figure, only the red and blue that every person from Cagliari recognises: the colours of their city and of the gonfalone that represents it.

The colours of the gonfalone

The city statute describes the gonfalone of Cagliari as «party per pale in red and blue», charged with the city's coat of arms. The ceremonial regulation adds that the city's flag flies permanently on the façade of the Palazzo Civico on Via Roma, next to those of the Sardinia Region, Italy and the European Union. The red and blue flag takes up the two colours of the gonfalone, without the coat of arms; neither the statute nor the regulation says which colour goes at the pole.

The castle on the rock

Cagliari's coat of arms was granted on 17 May 1766 by King Charles Emmanuel III. It is quartered: in two quarters the cross of Savoy, in the other two a castle with three towers, the middle one taller, standing on a rock rising from the sea. The shield is adorned with palms, supported by two tritons and crowned. The gonfalone also bears the gold medal for military valour.

Pisans, Aragonese, Savoy

The castle in the coat of arms recalls the city's history. In 1216 the Pisans were allowed to fortify the hill with Castel di Castro, today's Castello quarter, which became one of the greatest fortresses of the West. In 1326 Cagliari passed to the Aragonese and became their stronghold in Sardinia; in 1720 the House of Savoy arrived as kings of Sardinia.

The first of May, Saint Ephisius

The city's most heartfelt day is the feast of Saint Ephisius. In 1652, during the plague, the city council made a vow to the saint; since May 1657 the city has fulfilled it every year. On the first of May thousands of Sardinians in traditional dress accompany the saint's statue in procession on its journey to Nora, the place of his martyrdom.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Cagliari or has roots there, for families who emigrated and Sardinian clubs around the world, for the city council and its offices, for a school, for the feast of Saint Ephisius, for fans of Cagliari who want the red and blue outside the stadium too, for sailing clubs, for a restaurant or a shop selling Sardinian products, for anyone who has visited the Castello quarter and wants to remember it. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
