Municipality of Brescia Flag

White and blue: the flag of Brescia

The flag of Brescia is divided into two horizontal stripes, white at the top and blue at the bottom. No figure, only the two colours the people of Brescia have carried with them for generations: the white and blue of the lion in their coat of arms.

The blue lion on silver

The city statute describes Brescia's coat of arms as a silver shield with a blue lion, armed, tongued and tailed in red, topped by a crown and accompanied by the motto «Brixia Fidelis». The white of the flag recalls the silver field, its blue the lion.

The gonfalone with the patron saints

The city's gonfalone is a cloth divided into two panels, white and light blue, with the coat of arms in the centre; on the back it carries the images of Saints Faustinus and Jovita, the city's patrons. The statute does not describe a flag: the white and blue one is the civic flag Brescia uses, with the same colours as the gonfalone.

The Lioness of Italy

From Roman Brixia to free commune, Brescia took part in both Lombard Leagues, was annexed by Venice in 1428 and in the 19th century was a protagonist of the struggles against Austria. In 1849 it held out for ten days, from 23 March to 1 April, fighting street by street. For that courage the poet Aleardo Aleardi called it the «Lioness of Italy», a title later made famous by Giosuè Carducci.

15 February, Faustinus and Jovita

Brescia's day is 15 February, the feast of the patron saints Faustinus and Jovita. The streets of the centre come alive with the great fair, and the feast's programme includes the traditional ceremony of the Red Galero, exhibitions, concerts and walks in the footsteps of the saints.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Brescia or has roots there, for families who emigrated and Brescian associations around the world, for the city council and its offices, for a school, for the feast of Saint Faustinus and its fair, for those who remember the Ten Days, for fans of Brescia's teams, for a restaurant or a shop selling Brescian products, for anyone who has visited the city of the Lioness and wants to take its colours home. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
