Description

City of Bari Flag

White and red: the flag of Bari

The flag of Bari is divided into two vertical halves, white next to the pole and red at the fly. Two clean colours, without figures, that the people of Bari have always known: they are the colours of their city, of their coat of arms and of their greatest feast.

A shield of silver and red

Bari's coat of arms is a shield «party per pale silver and red», divided vertically in half, white on one side and red on the other, topped by a crown. The flag simply lays the shield out on the cloth. According to tradition, the white stands for faith and the red for the blood shed to defend it.

An emblem historically in use

The statute of the Comune di Bari says that the city has «a gonfalone and an emblem historically in use». The statute does not describe a flag: the white and red is the flag the city uses by tradition, the same one that flag reference books record as the flag of Bari.

The city of Saint Nicholas

In the Middle Ages Bari was one of the ports where crusaders embarked for the Holy Land. In 1087 some merchants brought the body of Saint Nicholas to Bari from Myra; two years later the saint was proclaimed patron and the great basilica was begun, around which the life of old Bari was organised. Since then the city has been a constant destination for pilgrims.

From 7 to 9 May

The days the people of Bari wait for all year are those of the feast of Saint Nicholas, from 7 to 9 May. On 7 May the historical procession crosses the city recalling the arrival of the relics from Myra; on 8 May the saint's statue is taken aboard and carried in procession at sea along the coast; on 9 May the drawing of the Holy Manna is celebrated.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Bari or has roots there, for families who emigrated and Apulian associations around the world, for the city council and its offices, for a school, for the feast of Saint Nicholas and the historical procession, for fishermen and sailing clubs, for fans of Bari, for a restaurant, a bakery or a shop selling Apulian products, for anyone who has walked the alleys of old Bari and wants to remember it. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
