City of Arezzo Flag

The black horse on red: the flag of Arezzo

This Arezzo flag is a red field with the city's shield in the centre: a black horse rearing on a white field. The red of the gonfalone and the horse of the coat of arms together make a flag that is recognised at first sight, in the square as at the window.

A horse rearing and turned

The Statute of the Comune di Arezzo describes the coat of arms in a few words: «a black horse on a white field, rearing and turned, historically adopted as the emblem of the city of Arezzo». Rearing means standing on its hind legs; turned means facing right for the viewer, the opposite of how animals are usually drawn in coats of arms. The coat of arms was granted by a declaration of the Head of Government of 9 July 1931.

The red of the gonfalone

Arezzo's gonfalone, in the old form of Tuscan gonfalones, is red, with the civic coat of arms in the centre and the words «Comune di Arezzo» in silver, and carries a tie and ribbons in the national colours. This flag takes up its red field and the shield with the horse, without inscriptions or ornaments, in a form to be flown on any occasion.

A free commune since the twelfth century

The Statute proudly recalls the tradition of free municipal institutions that the community of Arezzo won from the dawn of the twelfth century. And the black horse, the Statute says again, is the emblem the city adopted in the course of its history: a sign that has accompanied Arezzo from the days of the free commune to today.

The Giostra del Saracino

Twice a year, in June and September, Arezzo runs the Giostra del Saracino, the Joust of the Saracen, the city's great festival of horsemanship. The four quarters, Porta Crucifera, Porta del Foro, Porta Sant'Andrea and Porta Santo Spirito, compete with their knights, and the city fills with banners and colours. These are the days when the people of Arezzo bring out all their symbols.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Arezzo or with roots in the city, for those who live far away and carry their city with them, for the Comune and its offices, for schools, for the quarters and everyone who lives the Giostra del Saracino, for flag-wavers and historic groups, for fans of Arezzo's teams, for a restaurant, a wine bar or a shop selling Tuscan products, for the tourist who wants to take the black horse home. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
