Description

City of Taormina Flag

Light blue and white, with the bull-woman of Taormina: the flag of Taormina

This flag is split down the middle: light blue on the left, white on the right. In the centre stands a blue shield with a crowned woman whose body ends as a bull, holding a globe in her right hand and a sceptre in her left. A gold city tower crown sits above the shield, and a wreath of laurel and oak tied with a ribbon in the Italian tricolour frames it.

A flag in the statute

Article 4 of the Statute of the Comune of Taormina, titled «Stemma, Gonfalone, Bandiera», says the flag is split in two, light blue and cream (azzurro e panna), with the arms of the City in the centre. The gonfalone is a yellow cloth carrying the arms, richly ornamented with silver.

The queen with the body of a bull

The statute gives the arms as «D'azzurro, alla donna coronata regina, tenente con la destra un mondo e con la sinistra lo scettro, dai fianchi in giù con la forma di tauro»: a blue field with a woman crowned as a queen, holding a world in her right hand and a sceptre in her left, with the body of a bull from the hips down. Italian Wikipedia says the arms were recognised by decree of the Head of Government of 11 May 1928, with the ornaments of a city.

An old image in the cathedral

One of the oldest testimonies of the city's arms, Italian Wikipedia says, is carved in the Duomo and shows a female figure with the body of a four-legged bull, holding in her hand the symbols of the territory's hegemony, the castle of Mola and the Castello Regio.

Tauromenion

The ancient name of Taormina was Tauromenion. Italian Wikipedia says the most accepted hypothesis ties it to the hill position of the town, and that in one account the survivors of Naxos settled on the slopes of a nearby hill «shaped like a bull». Taormina is in the Metropolitan City of Messina, in Sicily; its patron saint is St Pancras, celebrated on 9 July.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Taormina or from the Messina area, for those who live far away and carry their place with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
