Description

Municipality of Quarto Flag

Light blue and white, with the arms of the town: the flag of Quarto

This flag is split down the middle: light blue on the left, white on the right. In the centre stands a shield with a silver six-pointed star in a pale-blue sky, a Roman milestone marked IV on a green plain, and a band of paving stones beneath it; along the bottom runs the motto «AD QUARTUM LAPIDEM CAMPANIAE VIAE». A silver mural crown sits above, and branches of laurel and oak tied with a tricolour ribbon frame it.

At the fourth milestone

Araldicacivica quotes the blazon of the arms, granted by decree of the President of the Republic of 16 February 1960: a sky-coloured field with a silver star; green countryside crossed by a Roman road, with a milestone beside it marked IV and topped by the letters S.P.Q.R. in black; and the legend AD QUARTUM LAPIDEM CAMPANIAE VIAE. Italian Wikipedia says the name Quarto probably comes from «ad quartum», the fourth mile from Puteoli on the Via Campana, and that this is shown in the civic arms.

Light blue and white

Araldicacivica lists the flag of Quarto as a cloth divided light blue and white («partito di azzurro e di bianco»), and gives the gonfalone in the text of the decree with the two colours the other way round. This flag follows the colours of the flag, with the arms in the centre.

In the Campi Flegrei

Quarto, also known as Quarto Flegreo, is a comune in the Metropolitan City of Naples, in Campania. The Statute of the Comune calls it a comune of the Phlegraean area. Italian Wikipedia says Greek colonists, after the founding of Cuma and Pithecusa, pushed inland to the basin of Quarto, attracted by the fertile soil.

The mother church

The first mention of the mother church of Quarto, Santa Maria Libera Nos a Scandalis, dates, according to Italian Wikipedia, to 23 August 1243, when the bishop of Pozzuoli, Pietro, consecrated it. It was built on the site of an older chapel, since a document of 1013 already mentions the sale of a plot of land at a place called «ad Scandola» in Quarto.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Quarto or from the Campi Flegrei, for those who live far away and carry their town with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
