Description

Municipality of Paglieta Flag

Yellow and red, with the arms of the town: the flag of Paglieta

This flag is split down the middle: yellow on the left, red on the right. In the centre stands a blue shield with an antique gold crown above five gold ears of wheat tied by a red ribbon. A silver mural crown sits above the shield, and branches of laurel and oak tied with a tricolour ribbon frame it. There is no text.

Five ears of wheat

Italian Wikipedia gives the blazon of the arms: on blue, five gold ears of wheat held together and tied with red, topped by a gold antique crown. The Statute of the Comune of Paglieta says that the arms and gonfalone, deposited at the Archivio Centrale dello Stato, were approved by decree of the President of the Republic of 14 April 1980, no. 1155.

Yellow and red

The same page gives the gonfalone as a cloth divided yellow and red («partito di giallo e di rosso»). This flag takes those two colours and puts the arms in the centre.

From a Frentani outpost to a medieval castle

Paglieta is a comune in the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo. Italian Wikipedia says it was first a Frentani outpost, then a Roman colony; the first mention is of 1087, when it is among seven castles in a sale between the monastery of San Giovanni in Venere and the diocese of Chieti. From 1312 to 1533 it belonged to Lanciano, and from 1577 to the end of the fiefs to the Mormile-Pignatelli family.

Saint Justus and the Risorgimento

The statute names Saint Justus the Martyr as the patron of Paglieta, with 14 July a public holiday. According to Italian Wikipedia the town took part in the movements of Italian unification with Giuseppe Tretta, a major in Garibaldi's army.

Who chooses it
