Description

City of Orte Flag

Red and white, with the arms of the city: the flag of Orte

This flag is split down the middle: red on the left, white on the right. In the centre stands a shield with a red bridge of five arches over blue water, topped by three red towers: the two on the sides crenellated, the central one lower with a spire. A silver mural crown sits above, and branches of laurel and oak frame it.

The bridge of five arches

Italian Wikipedia says the arms were recognised by decree of the Prime Minister of 3 June 1956: a red bridge of five arches straddling a watercourse, with three towers above it, the side ones crenellated in the Ghibelline manner, the central one lower and ending in a spire. The Statute of the Comune confirms the date and says that in official ceremonies the insignia of the Comune is the gonfalone with the arms on it.

Red and white, the colours of a free commune

The gonfalone was granted by decree of the President of the Republic of 4 December 1956 and is a cloth divided red and white. Italian Wikipedia says the red and white of the gonfalone are still the witness of the status of «libero comune» that Orte won in the late Middle Ages.

A river port on the Tiber

Orte is a comune in the province of Viterbo, in Lazio. Italian Wikipedia places it just upstream of the confluence of the Nera into the Tiber, an important river port that became a hub of the Roman road network with the building of the Via Amerina in 241-240 BC, and says it kept the bishop's seat from 453. The statute adds that, in the early Middle Ages, a shift in the road system brought more traffic, and that from then on Orte took the title of city, which it has always kept.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Orte or from the Tiber valley, for those who live far away and carry their city with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
