Description

Municipality of Mazzano Romano Flag

Blue and red, with the arms of the town: the flag of Mazzano Romano

This flag is split down the middle: blue on the left, red on the right. In the centre stands a yellow shield with a saint in a halo, holding a hammer in one hand and ears of wheat in the other. A coronet sits above the shield, and a branch of laurel with red berries and a branch of oak with acorns, tied with a gold knot, frame it. There is no text.

The saint with the hammer and the wheat

The Statute of the Comune of Mazzano Romano describes the arms as a shield between a branch of oak with acorns and a branch of laurel with berries, topped by a crown. Inside the shield a saint holds a hammer in the right hand and grips three ears of wheat in the left. The statute adds that the gonfalone, kept at the town hall, carries the same image as the arms.

Blue and red

Italian Wikipedia describes the flag of the town as a rectangular cloth divided blue and red, with the arms of the town in the centre. The same page gives the gonfalone as a gold cloth.

The Treja valley

Mazzano Romano is a comune in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in Lazio. According to Italian Wikipedia the river Treja runs through its territory and cuts the tufa rock into gorges, making waterfalls; the best known is the Monte Gelato cascade. The same page lists the Parco suburbano Valle del Treja and the Parco regionale di Veio among its natural areas.

A castle since the Middle Ages

Italian Wikipedia records that a document of Pope Boniface VIII of 1299 mentions the Castrum Mazzani, with the first trace of the cult of Saint Nicholas of Bari in the village. In 1658 the fief passed by inheritance to the noble Del Drago family, who kept it until the land reform of the 1950s. The old village still has its medieval layout, with lanes that follow the shape of the rock.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Mazzano Romano or from the Treja valley, for those who live far away and carry their town with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs.
