Description

Municipality of Lanuvio Flag

Blue, with the arms of the town: the flag of Lanuvio

This flag is blue. Across the top, in an arch, runs the inscription «CITTÀ DI LANUVIO» in gold capitals, above a gold mural crown. In the centre stands a shield with a goddess on a light blue ground, holding a spear in one hand and a shield in the other, with a serpent at her feet, and the letters I.S.M.R. in white below it. A wreath of laurel and oak, tied with a ribbon in the Italian tricolour, frames the shield.

Juno Sospita

The Statute of the Comune says that the arms and the gonfalone, the latter blue, carry the image of the mythical Juno Sospita of Lanuvium and, in the exergue, the letters I.S.M.R., Iuno Sospita Mater Regina. It adds that, because Lanuvio was a Roman municipium, the Comune may officially head its acts with the acronym S.P.Q.L. Italian Wikipedia says that the gonfalone is a blue cloth carrying the arms, with a gold inscription.

The sanctuary that made the town

Italian Wikipedia tells that the temple of Juno Sospita worked from the sixth century BC and was the driving element of the town for ten centuries, until the edict of Theodosius of 391 closed the pagan temples. In 332 BC Lanuvio obtained from Rome the civitas cum suffragio, in exchange for letting the Roman people administer half of the income of the sanctuary.

The home of two emperors

Italian Wikipedia says that the Roman emperors Antoninus Pius and Commodus were born in Lanuvium, and that the Antonian estate took its name from their villa.

Bombed in 1943-44

The comune holds the silver medal for civil merit, awarded on 10 March 2004 because, during the last world war, it was bombed repeatedly and suffered the reprisals and round-ups of the Nazi troops, which almost totally destroyed the town.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Lanuvio or from the Castelli Romani, for those who live far away and carry their city with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for lovers of ancient Rome, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
