Description

City of Frascati Flag

Crimson and yellow, with the arms of the city: the flag of Frascati

This flag is divided down the middle: crimson on the left, yellow on the right. In the centre stands a blue shield with the letters S·P·Q·T. in gold at the top and two crossed gold keys tied with a red cord. A gold mural crown sits above the shield, and branches of laurel and oak, tied with a ribbon in the Italian tricolour, frame it from below. There is no lettering outside the arms.

The colours of Rome

Italian Wikipedia tells that in the autumn of 1837 a great epidemic broke out in Rome and thousands of its inhabitants left the city. Frascati was the only town of the Roman district that opened its gates to them and housed them until the epidemic ended. In thanks for that hospitality, from that day Frascati has had the same yellow and red flag as Rome.

Two keys and four letters

The arms are described as blue, with two gold keys crossed in saltire, topped by the letters S.P.Q.T. in gold and joined by a red cord, with the ornaments of a city («Ornamenti esteriori da Città»). The Statute of the Comune explains that the keys are the apostolic keys and that S.P.Q.T. stands for Senatus Populusque Tusculanus, the senate and people of Tusculum.

From Tusculum to Frascati

The town grew after the destruction of Tusculum in 1191, when the seat of the diocese moved from Tusculum to Frascati. In 1538 Pope Paul III gave Frascati the title of civitas, with the name Tusculum novum. From the second half of the sixteenth century, important figures of the Apostolic Camera built their residences here, the Tuscolane Villas, among them Villa Aldobrandini; about a dozen villas stand in and around the town.

A town that was bombed

The Statute recalls that Frascati was awarded the silver medal for civil valour by decree of 18 February 1960, for the bombings it suffered and the courage of its people.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Frascati or from the Castelli Romani, for those who live far away and carry their city with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for the winemakers, restaurants and shops of the Tuscolane hills, for anyone who wants to show where they belong. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
