Description

Municipality of Castignano Flag

Red and white, with the arms of the comune: the flag of Castignano

This flag is split down the middle: red on the left, white on the right. Across the top, in black capitals, runs «COMUNE DI CASTIGNANO». In the centre is a red shield with a green tree on a green mount of five peaks, with a silver fleur-de-lis on the left of the trunk and a silver star on the right. A silver mural crown sits above the shield, and branches of olive and oak frame it. The arms are drawn in a hand-painted style.

The chestnut on the mount

Araldicacivica blazons the arms as a red field with a green chestnut tree, growing on a mount of five peaks, flanked on the right by a silver fleur-de-lis and on the left by a silver star. Italian Wikipedia says the arms were recognised by decree of the President of the Council of Ministers of 10 December 1955, and that the name Castignano seems to come from the chestnut wood (Lucus castineanus) in the area, which Pliny mentions.

Red and white

Italian Wikipedia says the gonfalone, granted by decree of the President of the Republic of 19 April 1956, is a cloth divided red and white («partito di rosso e di bianco»). This flag takes those two colours, with the arms in the centre and the name above.

The oldest Italic inscription

Castignano is a comune in the province of Ascoli Piceno, in the Marche. Italian Wikipedia says it can claim to have given history the oldest Italic inscription found so far: the «stele di Castignano», a sandstone marker about a metre high, dated around the 7th-6th century BC, with a boustrophedon inscription about the sacredness of territorial boundaries. Between 1369 and 1380 the town was under the lord Boffo da Massa, and in 1860 it joined the Kingdom of Italy.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Castignano or the Ascoli Piceno hills, for those who live far away and carry their town with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
