Description

Municipality of Capriglia Irpina Flag

Light blue, with the arms of the comune: the flag of Capriglia Irpina

This flag is a light blue field. Above the arms runs «COMUNE DI» in gold capitals, and below them «CAPRIGLIA IRPINA». In the centre is a blue shield with a goat standing on a brown mound with two hills, on green ground. A gold mural crown sits above the shield, and sprigs of laurel and oak, tied with a red bow, frame it.

The goat on the hill

Italian Wikipedia blazons the arms as a blue field with a goat standing still on a mount of two hills, all in natural colours. It says the arms represent the origin of the village, which grew on a hill where, in late Roman times, there was a summer shelter for shepherds and their flocks. The name comes from the plural «Caprilia» of the Latin adjective «caprilis», linked to «caprile», a goat stable.

The gonfalone

According to Italian Wikipedia, the gonfalone is a blue cloth with the shield in the centre, topped by the municipal mural crown and framed by two sprigs of laurel and oak joined at the base by a red bow. This flag follows that description, with the name of the comune added.

A fief of the Kingdom of Naples

Capriglia Irpina is a comune in the province of Avellino, in Campania. Italian Wikipedia says it was a fief of powerful families of the Kingdom of Naples: the Carafa, the Caracciolo princes of Avellino and the Schipani. In 1738 the Schipani sold it to the marquis of Arneto, and in 1780 Nicola Macedonio bought it for about 42,000 ducats; it stayed with his family until feudal rights were abolished in 1806.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Capriglia Irpina or Irpinia, for those who live far away and carry their town with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs.
