Description

City of Canosa di Puglia Flag

Red and blue, with the arms of the city: the flag of Canosa di Puglia

This flag is split down the middle: red on the left, blue on the right. In the centre is the shield of the city, divided in two. On the left half, blue with gold fleurs-de-lis, a silver diagonal band and a red label across the top; on the right half, red with a large gold cross and four smaller crosses, each with its own small crosses around it. A pale-gold crown with towers sits above the shield, and a wreath of laurel and oak, tied with a cream ribbon, frames it.

Anjou and Courtenay

Italian Wikipedia explains that the arms of the city join two houses: Anjou and Courtenay, through the marriage in 1313 of Philip I of Anjou, prince of Taranto, and Catherine of Valois-Courtenay, empress of Constantinople. The Statute of the Comune blazons it as divided in two: blue with a silver band accompanied by six gold fleurs-de-lis (3 and 3) and a red label of three points at the top; and red with a gold cross between four small crosses, all in gold. The arms and the gonfalone were recognised by decree of the Head of Government of 11 August 1934.

The flag in the statute

The statute lists three emblems of the Comune: the arms, the gonfalone, and a vessillo (banner), described as a cloth divided red and blue and bearing the arms. Italian Wikipedia likewise calls the municipal flag a red and blue cloth with the arms. That is the design here.

A city since 1962

According to the statute, the Comune was given the title of Città by decree of the President of the Republic of 17 September 1962, for its historical traditions and the merits of its community; Italian Wikipedia adds that since 1962 the arms carry the city crown.

Canusium

Canosa di Puglia is a comune in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, in Apulia. Italian Wikipedia says it is one of the main archaeological centres of Apulia, a city of very long continuity of settlement. Legend has it founded by the Homeric hero Diomedes, and as Canusium it became a municipium of Rome in 88 BC.
