Description

Municipality of Ascrea Flag

Red over blue, with the arms of the comune: the flag of Ascrea

This flag is divided horizontally: red above, blue below. Across the top, in white capitals, runs «COMUNE DI ASCREA». In the centre stands a blue shield with a stone castle: a wide battlemented base with a smaller tower above it, on a strip of green ground. A silver mural crown sits over the shield, and a wreath of laurel and oak, tied with a ribbon in the Italian tricolour, frames it.

Arms and gonfalone

The Statute of the Comune of Ascrea describes the arms as a castle with a small tower, surrounded by two branches of oak and laurel tied with a ribbon in the national colours. Italian Wikipedia says the arms were recognised by decree of the Head of Government of 20 November 1937, and that the gonfalone is a cloth divided red and blue («troncato di rosso e di azzurro»). The heraldry site Araldicacivica gives the blazon as a blue field with a castle in natural colours, open in black, with Guelph battlements and a small windowed tower, set on grass, and it lists a flag in the same red and blue cloth with the arms in the centre.

The Sabina and the Turano valley

Ascrea is a comune in the province of Rieti, in Lazio. Italian Wikipedia calls it an agricultural centre of the Sabina, in the middle valley of the Turano, on a rocky spur on the slopes of Monte Navegna; the Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia nature reserve is listed among its natural areas.

A village of the Mareri

According to Italian Wikipedia, Ascrea probably grew between the 11th and 14th centuries, as the villages of Bulgaretta and Mirandella were gradually abandoned. It is first mentioned in 1392 as a possession of the Mareri family, and in 1968 it gave its hamlet of Rigatti to the comune of Varco Sabino. Araldicacivica says the origin of the name is obscure; some scholars propose the Latin personal name «Ascreius».

Who chooses it

For anyone from Ascrea or the Turano valley, for those who live far away and carry their town with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
