Description

Municipality of Palermo Flag

Yellow and red with the arms of the city: the flag of Palermo

This flag is divided diagonally, from the upper hoist to the lower fly: yellow above, red below. In the centre stands the red shield of the city with a golden eagle holding a white scroll lettered «S.P.Q.P.», under a golden city crown, framed by branches of laurel and oak tied with a ribbon in the Italian tricolour.

The colours of the arms

Italian Wikipedia says the city uses a diagonally divided flag («trinciata») taking the colours of the arms, yellow in the upper part and red in the lower part. The source does not say whether it carries the arms; this flag does.

The Roman eagle

The Statute of the Comune of Palermo describes the arms as red, with a golden Roman eagle with open wings, holding in its talons a band charged with the initials S.P.Q.P. According to Italian Wikipedia, the arms were officially recognised by decree of the Head of Government of 18 May 1942.

The gonfalone

The statute describes the gonfalone as a red cloth fringed in gold, charged with the golden Roman eagle with spread wings holding the band with the initials S.P.Q.P., with a tricolour tie and ribbons fringed in gold. The seat of the Comune is the Palazzo delle Aquile, the Palace of the Eagles.

A name from the harbour

Italian Wikipedia reports that the Phoenicians called the city Zyz, «the flower», and that the present name derives from the Greek pâs, «all», and hórmos, «port», meaning a wide harbour; the Romans called it Panormus.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Palermo or from Sicily, for those who live far away and carry their city with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for fans of the city's teams, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
