Description

City of Iglesias Flag

Red over blue, with the arms of the city: the flag of Iglesias

This flag is divided in two horizontal halves, red above and blue below. Across the red, in black capitals, runs the arched inscription «CITTÀ DI IGLESIAS». In the centre stands the shield, red with a blue band carrying three gold coins, each with a black eagle, under a golden city crown, with branches of laurel and oak tied with a ribbon in the Italian tricolour.

A flag seen on the town hall

The red and blue flag with the arms is shown in Wikimedia Commons as the flag of the city of Iglesias, drawn from Street View images of the town hall. The official gonfalone of the city is a different cloth: a blue one carrying the arms.

The arms

The statute of the Comune says the arms were approved by royal decree of 7 April 1933 and describes them as red with a blue fess charged with three gold coins, each bearing a black eagle with the Savoy cross on its breast, with the exterior ornaments of a city. Italian Wikipedia adds that King Charles Emmanuel III allowed the arms of the House of Savoy to be placed in the shield by a diploma of 15 January 1767.

The gonfalone

According to the statute, the gonfalone is a blue cloth richly embroidered in gold and carrying the arms of the Comune with the gold inscription «città di Iglesias». It was approved by council resolution no. 251 of 14 September 1984 and by decree of the President of the Republic of 5 December 1984.

A royal city of Sardinia

Iglesias began as Villa di Chiesa (Villa Ecclesiae), a new town founded under the Pisan Della Gherardesca family, who wanted to exploit the silver resources of the territory. Italian Wikipedia records that it was given the title of Città Regia on 7 June 1327 by James II of Aragon.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Iglesias or from the Iglesiente and Sulcis, for those who live far away and carry their city with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for fans of the city's teams, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
