Description

Santo Spirito Quarter of Florence Flag

Blue, with the white dove: the flag of the Santo Spirito quarter

This flag is a plain blue field. In the centre a white dove, wings spread, comes down head first, with a small red disc on its breast and golden-brown rays or flames below it, in a hand-drawn style.

The Florentine quarters

According to Italian Wikipedia, when the walls were extended the city was divided in sestieri, which lasted until 1343, the year Walter of Brienne, the Duke of Athens, was driven out. After that date new quarters were created, each divided into four gonfaloni and each named after the main church inside it: Santo Spirito, Santa Croce, Santa Maria Novella and San Giovanni.

Across the Arno

The quarter of Santo Spirito covers the whole Oltrarno inside the walls, the part of the city across the Arno, and takes its name from the basilica of Santo Spirito. Its colour is white and its four gonfaloni were Scala, Nicchio, Ferza and Drago.

The dove of the Holy Spirit

The quarter's gonfalone is described on Italian Wikipedia as a radiant white dove, symbol of the descent of the Holy Spirit, on a blue field. The red disc on the dove's breast in this drawing is not explained in the sources we read.

The Bianchi of the calcio storico

Santo Spirito is one of the four teams of the calcio storico fiorentino, the historic Florentine football played between the quarters: the Bianchi (white) of Santo Spirito, the Azzurri of Santa Croce, the Rossi of Santa Maria Novella and the Verdi of San Giovanni. The team's flag carries the dove, and it also uses the basilica as a symbol.

Who chooses it

For people from the Oltrarno and San Frediano, for Florentines living far away, for the fans and supporters of the Bianchi in the calcio storico, for the churches, associations, shops and restaurants of the quarter, and for collectors of Florentine heraldry. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
