Description

Guelph Party of Florence (Parte Guelfa) Flag

White, with a red eagle and a green dragon: the arms of the Parte Guelfa

This flag is a white field. In the centre a red eagle with spread wings grips a dark green dragon in its talons, and above the eagle's head floats a small red Florentine lily. There is no text.

The Guelph party of Florence

According to Italian Wikipedia, the Parte Guelfa was a political party and chivalric order formed in Florence in the 1200s, opposed to the Ghibelline party in the struggles between factions that shook much of Italy. The Florentine Guelphs received formal recognition from Pope Clement IV, after their great contribution of knights and money to the battle of Benevento (26 February 1266).

The arms of the pope's family

After that victory Clement IV granted his own arms to the Parte Guelfa, which from then on bore the arms of the French Foucois family of the pope: «d'argento, all'aquila di rosso brancante un drago verde», a silver (white) field with a red eagle clutching a green dragon. To these the Florentines added a small Florentine lily. This is the design shown on the flag.

From power to confraternity

The Parte Guelfa went from a military body to a political and administrative office of the Florentine Republic, and later a magistracy with jurisdiction over rivers, countryside and fortifications of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. It was stripped of its functions in 1769 by Grand Duke Peter Leopold, but was never formally suppressed by the pontifical authority. On 25 March 2015, the old Florentine New Year, it was reactivated as the Arciconfraternita Parte Guelfa, a voluntary association.

Seen all over Florence

Italian Wikipedia notes that the arms of the Parte Guelfa appear on many historic buildings of Florence, among them Palazzo Vecchio, the Bargello, the Palagio dei Capitani di Parte Guelfa, the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and the Santissima Annunziata, and in other cities including Pistoia and Scarperia.
