Florence Shoemakers' Guild (Arte dei Calzolai) Flag

White with three black bars: the banner of the Arte dei Calzolai

This banner is a white field crossed by three horizontal black bands, with a rough, textured look. A thin black and white striped edge runs along the top, the fly and the bottom.

The shoemakers' guild

According to Italian Wikipedia, the Arte dei Calzolai was one of the Arti Minori of Florence. It was formed in 1273 and included shoemakers, clog makers, belt makers and slipper makers, in the city and in the countryside. Some sources give up to 4,500 members, and in 1293 the guild was for a time admitted among the major guilds.

A banner from Montaperti

In 1288 the guild obtained the right to carry as its gonfalone the «pezza fasciata di argento e nero» (a field barred in silver and black), already used as an ensign by some groups of foot soldiers at the battle of Montaperti in 1260. Italian Wikipedia gives the guild's arms as «d'argento a tre fasce di nero»: a silver (white) field with three black bars, which is this flag.

Seat and end

The guild met in the chiasso Baroncelli, behind the Loggia della Signoria, next to the seat of the Maestri di Pietra e Legname. In the 1500s Cosimo I de' Medici merged it with the Galigai and Correggiai into the Università dei Maestri di Cuoiame; the old guilds were all suppressed in 1770 by Grand Duke Peter Leopold.

Strict rules

The surviving statutes, none earlier than 1355, show how severe the rules were. From the 1300s nobody could enter the guild hall barefoot, without a hood, in shirtsleeves, wearing an apron or with a cap on his head, and members had to keep silence during meetings.
