Description

Florence Linen Drapers' and Second-Hand Dealers' Guild (Arte dei Linaioli e Rigattieri) Flag

Red and white, side by side: the banner of the Arte dei Linaioli e Rigattieri

This banner is split down the middle: red on the hoist side, white on the fly side. The red has a worn, textured look. A thin red and white striped edge runs along the top, the fly and the bottom.

A guild made of two

According to Italian Wikipedia, the Arte dei Linaioli e Rigattieri was one of the Arti Minori of Florence. It was born in 1291 from the union of the older Arte dei Rigattieri (second-hand dealers) and the Arte dei Linaioli (linen drapers), which until then had been separate. For most of the 1300s each kept its own consul and a good deal of independence, and the real merger came only in 1449.

Red and white

Italian Wikipedia gives the guild's arms as «partito di rosso e d'argento»: split down the middle into red and silver (white). That is exactly the flag you see here, with no figure on it.

The seat

In the end the guild bought a house in Piazza Sant'Andrea and had it restored and decorated with frescoes; a chancellor of the guild praised it as no less beautiful than the seats of the major guilds. Most of these buildings were demolished in the 1800s during the rebuilding of the Mercato Vecchio (today Piazza della Repubblica), but the main door and some fragments survive in the Museo di San Marco and the Museo Bardini.

The Università dei Linaioli

In 1534 Duke Alessandro de' Medici reformed the guilds' statutes. The Università dei Linaioli, which gathered the linen drapers, second-hand dealers, wine merchants and innkeepers, had Saint Mark as its protector and adopted as its emblem the white and red arms of the Linaioli.
