Description

Florence Silk Guild (Arte della Seta) Flag

White, with a red door: the banner of the Arte della Seta

This banner is a plain white field with one large charge in the centre: a red arched double door, framed by a grey stone arch, with two round studs and an iron latch drawn on it.

The guild of Por Santa Maria

According to Italian Wikipedia, the Arte della Seta, also called Arte di Por Santa Maria, was one of the seven major guilds (Arti Maggiori) of Florence. It was born in the early 1200s as a union of small merchants and artisans working between via Por Santa Maria, via Porta Rossa and Piazza del Mercato Nuovo: goldsmiths, sellers of cloth cuttings, felt hats, mirrors, combs and other small wares.

Silk takes over

The silk weavers of Florence, a group that began with exiles from Lucca, had their own guild by 1248 but were among the last to join Por Santa Maria, in the 1300s. Their trade grew so fast that they soon took the lead, and in the 1400s the association took the name Arte della Seta for good. In 1377 the guild ordered a new palace, still standing in via di Capaccio, near the Palagio di Parte Guelfa.

The red door

Italian Wikipedia gives the guild's arms as «d'argento alla porta rossa»: a silver (white) field with a red door. The guild's patron was Saint John the Evangelist, chosen when the goldsmiths dominated the guild. The guild was suppressed in 1770 by Grand Duke Peter Leopold.

A phrase born in the silk workshops

The Italian saying «a occhio e croce» (roughly, by eye) is said by Wikipedia to come from the language of the women of the Arte della Seta, who had to mend a broken weft thread «a occhio» by passing the needle «a croce» over the warp.
