Description

Florence Guild of Physicians and Apothecaries (Arte dei Medici e Speziali) Flag

White, with the Virgin and Child enthroned: the banner of the Arte dei Medici e Speziali

This banner is a plain white field. In the centre the Virgin, with a halo, sits on a red throne in a blue mantle over a red dress, holding the Christ Child in her arms. The drawing has the rough, hand-inked look of an old woodcut.

The guild of doctors and apothecaries

According to Italian Wikipedia, the Arte dei Medici e Speziali was one of the seven major guilds (Arti Maggiori) of Florence. The oldest statute that survives dates from 1313 and lists the rules every member had to follow; by the end of the 1200s more than 500 masters had already enrolled. In 1314 the guild bought one of the houses of the Lamberti family as its seat. It was suppressed in 1770 by Grand Duke Peter Leopold of Lorraine.

The Virgin with the Child

Italian Wikipedia gives the guild's arms as «d'argento alla Vergine con Cristo in collo al naturale»: a silver (white) field with the Virgin holding Christ in her arms, in natural colours. The guild took the Madonna as its protector, and her statue at Orsanmichele is attributed to Pietro di Giovanni Tedesco, made probably around 1400.

Medicine and spices

Medieval apothecaries sold medicinal herbs, spices and mineral powders from their shops, much like today's herbalists and pharmacies. At the end of the 1400s the guild published a book called Il ricettario fiorentino, a compendium of the pharmacology of the time that fixed the doses of medicines every member had to respect by law. It was printed and reprinted from 1499 to 1789.
