Description

Florence Judges' and Notaries' Guild (Arte dei Giudici e Notai) Flag

A gold star on blue: the banner of the Arte dei Giudici e Notai

This banner is a blue field with a large eight-pointed star in a brownish gold, centred on the flag.

One of the seven major guilds

According to Italian Wikipedia, the Arte dei Giudici e Notai was one of the Arti Maggiori of Florence. The first records of it date from 1212 and, although it practised not a trade but the liberal art of jurisprudence, it was one of the most powerful and prestigious guilds in the city. Judges and notaries followed clearly separate careers, and notaries had to pass three very strict examinations.

The proconsolo

The highest office of the guild was the proconsolo, a kind of senior consul who settled disputes and watched over the members. In the fourteenth century he became the representative of all twenty-one guilds of Florence and the third most important office of the Comune, after the Gonfaloniere di Giustizia and the Signoria.

An eight-pointed star

Italian Wikipedia gives the guild's arms as «d'azzurro, alla stella d'oro a otto punte»: a blue field with a gold eight-pointed star. That is the charge this banner shows. The guild's seat was in the crypt of Santo Stefano di Badia from 1269, then the tower of the Bargello from 1275 and the church of San Procolo from 1304, until it built its own palace on via del Proconsolo, which still exists.

Saints and sculptures

The oldest patron of the guild was Sant'Ivo. For its tabernacle at Orsanmichele it commissioned a bronze San Luca from Giambologna, placed in 1601. The guild was suppressed in 1777 by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo.
