Description

Italian Minority in Yugoslavia Flag

The Italian tricolour with a red star: the flag of the Italian minority in Yugoslavia

This flag has three vertical stripes, green, white and red, like the Italian tricolour. In the middle of the white stripe stands a red five-pointed star outlined in yellow.

Used in Fiume and Istria

Flags of the World describes the flag of the Italian minority as vertically divided green-white-red with a red star outlined in yellow in the middle. The Italian flag with the red star had been used in Fiume (today Rijeka) since about 1943, and officially since 1946 or 1947 as the flag of the Italian ethnic group in Yugoslavia.

Why a star

FOTW quotes a Yugoslav children's encyclopedia of 1985, which says that all nationalities in Yugoslavia had an equal right to hoist their national flags, but with the red five-pointed star in the middle as the common symbol of belonging to the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The flag was often seen flying together with the national, republic (Croatian or Slovenian) and Socialist Party flags.

Until 1990

According to FOTW the flag was still in use until 1990 and the break-up of Yugoslavia, when it was replaced by the Italian flag, now used by Italians living in both Slovenia and Croatia.

The people behind it

With the peace treaty of 1947 most of Istria went to Yugoslavia, which triggered the Istrian–Dalmatian exodus of most Istrian Italians; the 1953 census counted only 36,000 Italians in Yugoslavia. Those who stayed became an autochthonous national minority, recognised today by the Constitution of Croatia, with the Italian Union of Croatia and Slovenia based in Rijeka.

Who chooses it

For Italians of Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia and their descendants, for the associations of the Italian community in Croatia and Slovenia, for historians, museums and schools, for collectors of flags of Yugoslavia and of its minorities, and for anyone who wants to remember this chapter. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
