Description

Septinsular Republic Flag

The winged lion on blue: the flag of the Septinsular Republic

This flag is dark blue. A large gold winged lion with a halo walks across it and holds a closed book marked with a cross. Behind the book rise seven arrows, bound by a scroll that bears the date 1800.

Seven islands, one republic

English Wikipedia says the Septinsular Republic, also known as the Republic of the Seven United Islands, existed from 1800 to 1807 under nominal Russian and Ottoman sovereignty in the Ionian Islands: Corfu, Paxoi, Lefkada, Cephalonia, Ithaca, Zakynthos and Kythira.

Lion, arrows and book

Wikipedia says Capodistrias and Sigouros Desyllas wrote the new constitution and designed the new flag of the state. The flag shows the Venetian Lion of Saint Mark holding a bundle of seven arrows, which stand for the islands, and a Bible. It was formally raised at Corfu on 13 January 1801 (1 January in the old style calendar).

The end of the republic

The islands had been Venetian possessions for centuries before. By the Treaty of Tilsit in July 1807 the islands were ceded to Napoleonic France; French troops landed on Corfu on 20 August, and the French then hoisted their own flag and had the officials swear allegiance to Napoleon.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Corfu, Zakynthos, Cephalonia, Lefkada, Ithaca, Paxoi or Kythira, for those who live far away and carry their islands with them, for philharmonic societies, schools, associations and clubs, for readers of Mediterranean, Venetian and Napoleonic history, and for collectors of historical flags. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
