Description

Thessaloniki Flag

White and blue, with the head of Alexander: the flag of Thessaloniki

This flag is divided down the middle: white on the left, dark blue on the right. Along the top of the white half, blue squares make a battlement. Across the join sits a large gold disc with a red outline, showing a head in profile.

Alexander on the coin

Flags of the World describes the flag as vertically divided white and blue, with a yellow disc in the middle bearing the likeness of Alexander the Great, drawn after a coin or a medal. It says Alexander's likeness has appeared on all the municipal flags used in the city since 1984, according to the newspaper Ekathimerini of 4 February 2006.

Walls and a Municipal Council

The same source says the flag was adopted in early 2006 by the Municipal Council, during the preparation of the city's bid for the 2016 World Expo. It was designed by the architect Efi Seira, and the crenellated top of the white part stands for the fortifications of the city.

The city of Thessalonike

English Wikipedia says Thessaloniki was founded around 315 BC by Cassander of Macedon, who named it after his wife Thessalonike, a half-sister of Alexander the Great and daughter of Philip II. It is the capital of Central Macedonia and the second-largest city in Greece.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Thessaloniki or Macedonia, for those who live far away and carry their city with them, for the Municipality, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for fans of the city's teams, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
