Description

Municipality of Portoscuso Flag

White, with the arms of the town: the flag of Portoscuso

This flag is a plain white field. In the centre stands a silver mural crown over a shield divided in three: a factory with two smoking chimneys, a tower, and a large tuna in a blue field. Two leafy branches tied with a ribbon in the Italian tricolour frame the shield.

Factory, tower and tuna

The arms and the gonfalone of the Comune were granted by decree of the President of the Republic of 4 June 1979. Italian Wikipedia describes a shield with three parts: a factory with a smoking chimney, the tower of Portoscuso, and a natural tuna on blue. The gonfalone is described as a blue cloth, while this flag shows the arms on white.

A town born from the tuna fishery

The present town of Portoscuso was born in the second half of the 16th century, in the Spanish period, after the building of the tuna fisheries: the first settlement was made of huts used in the fishing seasons, and before the end of the century a coastal tower was built. With a garrison of only two soldiers it served mainly as a lookout rather than for defence, though a nineteenth-century account says it was built and armed to protect the fishery from raiders. The Spanish tower still stands inside the town, near the church of the Madonna d'Itria and the Tonnara, and overlooks the gulf.

The industrial pole of Portovesme

Portoscuso lies in south-western Sardinia, in the Sulcis-Iglesiente. After the Second World War, in the 1960s and 1970s, the industrial pole of Portovesme developed: the population grew by 42.6% between 1951 and 1961 and by 32.8% between 1961 and 1971.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Portoscuso or from the Sulcis, for those who live far away and carry their town with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for a restaurant, a shop, a guest house or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
