Description

Municipality of Palagiano Flag

Yellow, with the arms of the town: the flag of Palagiano

This flag is a plain yellow field. In the centre stands a blue shield with a gold wading bird standing on one leg, the other raised. A grey mural crown with a red lining sits above the shield, and two leafy branches tied with a ribbon in the Italian tricolour frame it from below.

The arms and the gonfalone

The Statute of the Comune of Palagiano says the arms are blue with a gold wading bird with its left leg raised, with the exterior ornaments of a comune. It describes the gonfalone as a yellow cloth richly embroidered in silver, bearing the arms and the silver inscription «COMUNE DI PALAGIANO».

Between feudal lords and the Ionian coast

Italian Wikipedia says Palagiano was enfeoffed by Robert Guiscard in 1081 and then passed through several families, among them the Orsini del Balzo, the Caracciolo and the Cicinelli di Cursi. It became a comune in 1806, and in 1923 passed from the province of Lecce to that of Taranto. A land reform in 1952 redistributed the estates of the last feudal lord, Prince Romanazzi.

Clementines and ravines

Palagiano is in the province of Taranto, in Apulia, at 40 m above sea level, and is known for citrus growing, sometimes called the city of the clementines. It has been part of the Parco delle Gravine Ioniche since 2005, and the Stornara nature reserve holds what the page calls the oldest Aleppo pine in Europe. In 1967 Salvatore Quasimodo called its landscape «Homeric». The patron saint is San Rocco, with celebrations on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday after 16 August.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Palagiano or from the province of Taranto, for those who live far away and carry their town with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for a citrus grower, a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
