Description

City of Pompei Flag

Sky blue, with the arms of the city: the flag of Pompei

This flag is a plain sky-blue field. In the centre stands a shield under a large gold city crown. The upper half shows a stormy sea beneath a cross with a rosary hanging from it, and a star in the corner. A red band divides it from the lower half, where two marble columns carrying a beam stand in front of Mount Vesuvius, which smokes.

The arms in the Statute

The Statute of the Comune says it identifies itself in its deeds and seal as «Città di Pompei» and describes the arms: cut, with a thin red band across; in the first field, sky-coloured, a stormy sea over which a wooden cross with a silver rosary lies in bend, with a star in the left corner; in the second, sky-coloured, two marble columns with a silver entablature, joined to Mount Vesuvius, all rising from the base. The Statute says the shield is topped by a crown with the words Città di Pompei; the crown on our flag carries no words. The Statute adds that the gonfalone of the Comune is blue and carries the arms.

City and comune

Italian Wikipedia says the arms were granted by royal decree of 30 May 1929 and the gonfalone by royal decree of 15 December 1930. The comune itself was established on 29 March 1928, built around the Valle di Pompei and promoted above all by Bartolo Longo; a decree signed on 9 January 2004 by President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi raised Pompei to the rank of city.

The ancient city

The ancient Pompeii was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD under 5 to 7 metres of volcanic material. Its remains were found in 1599, systematic excavations began in 1748, and the archaeological sites of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Oplontis were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Pompei or the Vesuvian towns, for those who live far away and carry their city with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for pilgrims and devotees of the Rosary, for schools, associations and clubs, for a hotel, a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
