Description

City of Cologna Veneta Flag

Blue, with the arms of the city: the flag of Cologna Veneta

This flag is a plain blue field. In the centre are the city's arms, drawn in the style of an old engraving: a gold winged lion with a book rests on top of an ornate gold frame, and inside a shield shows a white bridge of arches over dark blue water. A Latin motto runs up the left side of the shield and down the right: O COLONIA QUAE CUPIS, PONTE LUDERE LONGO.

The arms in the Statute

The Statute of the Comune of Cologna Veneta says the civic arms date from 1837. They are made of a bridge of three arches with flowing water beneath, three quinces on its parapets, the Latin motto taken from Catullus's poem XVII, «O COLONIA, QUAE CUPIS PONTE LUDERE LONGO», and, above it all, the winged lion of St Mark, a symbol of a land that belonged to the Most Serene Republic of Venice. The lion rests a paw on a book inscribed «PAX TIBI MARCE».

The gonfalone and the title of city

The Statute says the gonfalone reproduces the civic arms and that its colours are yellow and blue. It also records that the title of «Città» was authorised by a decree of Victor Emmanuel II, King of Italy, of 11 August 1867. Italian Wikipedia says that on that same day the name changed from Cologna to Cologna Veneta.

A town of the Serenissima

Italian Wikipedia places Cologna Veneta in the province of Verona, in Veneto, 39 km south-east of Verona and close to the borders with the provinces of Vicenza and Padua. In 1406 the doge Michele Steno joined it to the Sestiere Dorsoduro of Venice, and it stayed Venetian until the fall of the Serenissima in 1797. The town is known for the mandorlato, a Christmas sweet.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Cologna Veneta or from the Colognese, for those who live far away and carry their town with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for lovers of Venetian heraldry and the winged lion, for a pastry shop, a restaurant or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
