Description

Kingdom of Araucanía and Patagonia Flag

Blue, white and green: the flag of Araucanía and Patagonia

This flag has three horizontal stripes of equal width: blue at the top, white in the middle, green at the bottom. There is no emblem.

A kingdom proclaimed in 1860

English Wikipedia says the kingdom was declared by two decrees of 17 and 20 November 1860, issued by the French lawyer Orélie-Antoine de Tounens, who took the name Orélie-Antoine I. The page gives its motto as «Independencia y libertad» and lists its capital as Perquenco (claimed).

Arrest and exile

Chilean authorities arrested de Tounens on 5 January 1862. A court in Santiago declared him insane on 2 September 1862, and on 28 October 1862 he was expelled to France. He tried three further times to go back to Araucanía, without success. He died in poverty in Tourtoirac, France, on 17 September 1878.

Which way round are the stripes?

Flags of the World records that the colours were chosen by de Tounens before he proclaimed himself king, and that the sources disagree about the order of the stripes: some bulletins show blue, white and green, others describe the original as blue, green and white, and Jaume Ollé thinks a green, blue and white flag was hoisted in Araucanía for only a few weeks. Ollé adds that the flag was later changed in exile in France and is still used today, and he believes the current arrangement was adopted there to make the flag heraldically correct. This is the blue, white and green version.

The line of successors

After de Tounens, his claim passed to a line of successors, beginning with Achille I in 1878. Jean Raspail's 1981 novel recounts the efforts of de Tounens to establish the kingdom.
