Description

Lelystad Flag

Yellow and blue, with a white lily in a hexagon: the flag of Lelystad

This flag is yellow. Toward the hoist, about a third of the way across, stands a blue hexagon with a white fleur-de-lis. Four blue stepped bars start around the hexagon and each runs out to an edge of the flag, turning in the same direction like the arms of a pinwheel.

What the description says

The Dutch description gives «prinsegeel» (princely yellow) as the base colour, a cobalt-blue hexagon standing on one point, set on the imaginary line between the hoist and the fly part, carrying the white lily of the coat of arms, and four cobalt-blue corner shapes arranged clockwise, each reaching the edge of the flag with one arm. The hexagon has a middle line equal to one third of the height of the flag, and the arms are one tenth of the height thick.

What it stands for

The hexagon represents the concrete blocks that form the dikes of Flevoland. The white lily comes from the arms of the engineer Cornelis Lely and also appears on the flag of the province of Flevoland. Yellow stands for the dikes, as in the coat of arms of Lelystad, and blue for water; the blue shapes also stand for the letter L, a reference to Lely.

Introduced in 1979

The flag came into use on 11 September 1979, together with the municipal coat of arms. It was designed by Klaes Sierksma of the Stichting voor Banistiek en Heraldiek.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Lelystad or Flevoland, or with roots in the polders; for those who live far away and carry their city with them; for the municipality and its ceremonies, for clubs, associations and local businesses; for lovers of land won from the sea. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
