Description

Utrecht Flag

Red and white on the diagonal: the flag of Utrecht

This flag is divided diagonally from the top corner by the pole to the bottom corner at the fly. The lower part, along the pole and the bottom, is red; the upper part, toward the fly, is white.

What the council decided

The Utrecht city council fixed the flag as the official municipal flag on 5 July 1990. The description is «Rechtsgeschuind van rood en wit», and the ratio is 2:3.

From the civic militia

The flag goes back to the city's civic militia, the schutterij, which had two divisions, each with a triangular pennant, one red and one white. Together the two pennants formed a square split into two colours. On 27 April 1948 the council had adopted a flag very similar to the militia banner, with Saint Martin in the white part and a ratio of 2:3.

Saint Martin

The 1948 version read «Rechtsgeschuind van rood en wit, met in het wit Sint Maarten»: the saint on horseback cutting his red cloak in half for a beggar. The article says this story may be a legend, and that Saint Martin disappeared from the city flag in the sixteenth century. The flag of 1990 has no figure at all.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Utrecht, or with roots in the city and the province; for those who live far away and carry their city with them; for students and the university community, for the municipality and its offices, for clubs, associations and local businesses; for supporters of the city's teams. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
