Description

The Hague Flag

Yellow over green: the flag of The Hague

This flag is a plain bicolour of two equal horizontal bands, yellow on top and green below, with no emblem.

From 1920 to 1949

The city council adopted the flag on 2 December 1920. At the time it had two equal bands of green and yellow. On 28 March 1949 the colours were adjusted by an internal notice: the flag became yellow and green, and the green was changed from dark green to grass green. The flag has a ratio of 2:3.

Where the colours come from

The article gives two explanations. A popular story says yellow stands for the sand and green for the peat on which The Hague is built, but the article marks it as unsourced. The more plausible one, which it also attributes to the vexillologist Sierksma, is that the old city arms showed a stork on a grass field, so that both colours derive from the arms.

Before the colours

In 1857 the mayor reported to the Minister of the Interior that the colours of the city were black and yellow, like its coat of arms. That flag was never officially adopted, so black and yellow were the city's colours until the decision of 1920.

Who chooses it

For anyone from The Hague or Scheveningen, or with roots in South Holland; for those who live far away and carry their city with them; for the municipality and its offices, for supporters of the city's clubs, for associations and local businesses; for visitors and expats who have made the city home. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
