Description

Maastricht Flag

Red with a white star: the flag of Maastricht

This flag is a plain red field with one large white five-pointed star, set toward the pole rather than in the middle.

What the description says

The Dutch description reads «Rood met een witte vijfpuntige ster, waarvan de hoogte 3/5 van de hoogte van de vlag bedraagt». The height-to-width ratio is 2:3, and the centre of the star sits at one third of the width and half the height of the flag. It is the same image as in the city's coat of arms: a white five-pointed star on red.

A banner of six centuries

The first written mention of a Maastricht city banner dates from 1415, and it showed the city arms on red. A depiction of 1545 shows a six-pointed star, and in 1549 the flag is described as yellow, white and red. In 1647, ahead of the Peace of Münster, the white star on red returned.

A pause in the twentieth century

After the October Revolution of 1917 the flag was seen as too similar to that of the Soviet Union. On 2 September 1938 a design with a white top band and a red bottom band was adopted instead, partly against the advice of the Hoge Raad van Adel, which had proposed a five-pointed star on the red band. Later the old design was restored.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Maastricht or Limburg, or with roots on the Meuse; for those who live far away and carry their city with them; for the municipality and its ceremonies, for students, clubs, associations and local businesses; for visitors who fell for the city. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
