Description

Friesland Flag

Blue and white stripes with seven red leaves: the flag of Friesland

This flag is crossed by diagonal stripes, alternately blue and white, running from the top corner at the pole down to the opposite side. On the white stripes sit seven red heart-shaped leaves, the pompeblêden: two at the top near the fly, three along the middle stripe, and two at the bottom near the pole.

What the official description says

The decree of 1957 describes the flag as «Een vlag van zeven schuine banen van gelijke breedte, afwisselend kobaltblauw en wit», that is, seven slanting stripes of equal width, alternately cobalt blue and white. The white stripes carry seven scarlet pompeblêden, placed 2:3:2. The flag was set by the provincial authorities in July 1957 and became official through a Royal Decree of 11 February 1958.

From a medieval coat of arms

The flag dates from the late nineteenth century, but its motif goes back to a late-medieval Frisian coat of arms. The Friesch Genootschap adopted this arms design in 1830, and Harmen Sytstra proposed putting it in a flag in 1849. In 1897 the provincial authorities asked the heraldic artist Heerke Wenning for a drawing and a description, and his report was adopted on 14 October 1897.

Seven leaves, many waters

The sixteenth-century scholar Suffridus Petrus linked the seven leaves to the seven Frisian sea-lands; the article notes that so precise a number of territories probably never existed, and that seven likely means «many». In 1872 Joost Hiddes Halbertsma read the white diagonal bands as the streams and lakes that cross Friesland.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Friesland, from Leeuwarden, Sneek, Drachten or the Wadden islands, or with Frisian roots; for those who live far away and carry their province with them; for sailors on the Frisian lakes, for skating and sailing clubs, for schools, associations and local businesses. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
