Description

Overijssel Flag

Red, yellow and a wavy blue band: the flag of Overijssel

This flag has five horizontal bands: red, yellow, blue, yellow and red. The blue band in the middle is not straight but runs in gentle waves.

What the article says

According to the Dutch Wikipedia article the flag has five bands of equal height in red, yellow, blue, yellow and red, the blue one wavy, with three undulations. The Provincial Executive (Gedeputeerde Staten) of Overijssel adopted it on 21 July 1948 and it went into use on 20 August that year. The official proportion is 5:8½ (10:17), though 2:3 is often used in practice.

The river and the link with Holland

The wavy blue band stands for the river IJssel. The red and yellow stripes, the article says, express the historical bond with the region of Holland. The article says the colours match the provincial coat of arms, and that red and yellow are the colours of the arms of Holland.

The only flag the province has had

According to the article, the 1948 flag is the first and only flag Overijssel has ever had. About ten years earlier, for Queen Wilhelmina's 40th jubilee, the province had been shown with a plain red, yellow and blue tricolour, but that flag had no official status.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Zwolle, Enschede, Deventer, Almelo or Kampen, or with roots in Twente and Salland; for those who live far away and carry their province with them; for clubs, associations, rowing and sailing crews on the IJssel, and local businesses. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
