Description

Province of Utrecht Flag

White over red, with a cross in the corner: the flag of Utrecht

This flag has two horizontal bands, white above and red below. In the top corner next to the pole there is a red square patch cut by a white cross, which shows as four red squares.

What the article says

According to the Dutch Wikipedia article, the official description is a red square field carrying a white cross, set in the upper hoist of the white band. The proportions are 2:3. The Provincial States of Utrecht fixed the flag on 15 January 1952.

Two flags in one

The article describes the flag as a combination of two others: the white and red bicolour of the Archbishopric of Utrecht, and the white cross on a red field of the Sticht Utrecht.

A young provincial flag

In 1951 the High Council of Nobility (Hoge Raad van Adel) advised the province to adopt its own flag, which was done on 15 January 1952. A red, white and yellow flag used for Queen Wilhelmina's jubilee in 1938 had no official status. The article adds that the present flag is not very popular.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Utrecht, Amersfoort, Zeist or Nieuwegein, or with roots in the heart of the Netherlands; for those who live far away and carry their province with them; for clubs, associations and local businesses. This is the province; the city of Utrecht has its own flag. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
