Description

North Brabant Flag

Red and white squares: the flag of North Brabant

This flag is a chequerboard of red and white squares, four rows of six, 24 squares in all. The top left square is red.

What the article says

According to the Dutch Wikipedia article, the flag was adopted as the provincial flag by the Provincial Executive (Gedeputeerde Staten) of North Brabant on 21 January 1959. The proportions are 2:3 and the red is given as Pantone 032. The designer is listed as unknown.

The Brabants bont

The chequered pattern is called the 'Brabants bont'. The article says the flag dates from the Middle Ages and that red and white have been in use since the proclamation of the County of Leuven, in the Lotharingian period.

Out of use and back again

The article says in its introduction that the flag fell out of use in the 18th century, and in its history section that from the end of the 19th century a flag with a golden lion on black was flown instead of the chequered one, until the state archivist J. Smit brought the present design back into use. For the 750th anniversary of 's-Hertogenbosch in 1935 a flag parade was held. The flag hung in the Ridderzaal in The Hague until 2006.
