Description

Wallonia Flag

A red rooster on yellow: the flag of Wallonia

This flag is plain yellow with a large red rooster in the centre. The rooster faces the pole, one foot raised as it strides, with a high crest and a tail of long curving feathers.

Designed in 1912 and 1913

According to English Wikipedia, the design was made between 1912 and 1913. A commission led by Richard Dupierreux studied possible designs, and a watercolour of the rooster was made by the Belgian artist Pierre Paulus. Walloon activists formally adopted the flag at a meeting at the Communal Museum in Ixelles on 20 April 1913. It was originally associated with the Walloon Movement.

A rooster that was not in the old arms

The page notes that there was considerable disagreement over the choice of emblem and colours, and that roosters had not appeared as a heraldic symbol in any part of modern-day Wallonia. The Gallic rooster had long been used as a national symbol in France.

From a movement to the region

The flag fell into disuse during the interwar period and the Second World War. On 20 July 1975 it was formally adopted as the emblem of the recently created French Cultural Community, and on 15 July 1998 the Walloon Parliament adopted the same design as the emblem of the Walloon Region. It has since become an apolitical symbol of regional identity.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Wallonia, Liège, Namur or Charleroi, or with roots there, for those who live far away and carry their region with them, for clubs, schools, associations, supporters and businesses, and for friends of French-speaking Belgium. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
