Description

Burgenland Flag

Red over gold, with the arms of Burgenland: the flag of the Austrian state

This flag is split into two equal horizontal stripes: red above, gold below. In the centre stands the state's coat of arms, a gold shield reaching evenly into both stripes. On it a crowned red eagle, wings spread, stands on a dark rock, with a small red and white shield on its breast and a small black cross in each upper corner.

What the state law says

The Burgenland law on state symbols says that the colours of Burgenland are red and gold. It describes the flag as two equal horizontal stripes, the upper red and the lower gold, with the state arms in the middle, reaching evenly into both stripes, in the proportion two to three. The law has been in force since 5 March 1991.

The eagle and the two halves of the state

German Wikipedia gives the arms as a gold shield with a red, gold-crowned eagle. The eagle recalls the medieval counts of Mattersdorf-Forchtenstein, and the shield on its breast recalls the counts of Güssing-Bernstein. Together they are meant to show the union of the northern and southern parts of the state.

Red and gold after the First World War

According to German Wikipedia, the colours red and gold were used straight after the First World War by those campaigning for German West Hungary to join Austria, and the state parliament fixed the colours and the arms as state symbols in 1922. English Wikipedia adds that the area once belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and was ceded to Austria under the Treaty of Trianon in 1920. Its capital is Eisenstadt.
