Description

Viceroy of India Flag

The Union Jack with the Star of India: the Viceroy's flag

The flag of the Viceroy of India is the British Union Jack with, in the centre, the Star of India: a golden sun with wavy rays, a light blue circlet bearing the motto «Heaven's Light Our Guide», and in the middle a silver five-pointed star. Above the star, a crown. It is the flag of the man who governed India in the name of the British Crown.

From the Company to the Crown

Until 1858 the British possessions in India were governed by the East India Company. On 2 August 1858 the British Parliament passed the first Government of India Act and transferred power to the Crown. From then on, actual control of the government of India was in the hands of the viceroys, who also bore the title of governor-general and divided their time between Calcutta and Simla. In 1876 Queen Victoria added the title of Empress of India to her titles.

The Star of India

The star on the flag is the insignia of the Order of the Star of India, an order of chivalry instituted in 1861. Its emblem, the golden sun, the circlet with the motto and the silver star, appears on many flags of British India, including naval ensigns. According to some vexillologists the Order's symbols were chosen because they were acceptable to all the religions of India.

Several versions, one idea

Vexillologists record several versions of the Viceroy's flag, among them one with the so-called Tudor crown. The underlying design stays the same: the Union Jack, the Star of India in the centre and the crown above it. This is precisely the Tudor crown version.

1947

British rule in India ended in August 1947, with the transfer of power to two new independent states, India and Pakistan. With the Viceroy his flag disappeared too: the governors-general of the following years had different flags.
