Description

Uri Flag

A black bull on yellow: the Uri flag

The flag of the Canton of Uri shows a black bull's head, seen from the front, on a yellow field. The bull sticks out a red tongue and wears a red ring through its nose. The canton's colours are yellow and black.

The bull of Uri

Uri's oldest seal, from about 1245, already shows a bull's head with a ring, still in profile. The oldest Uri banner that has come down to us is the one carried at Morgarten in 1315. «Uristier», the bull of Uri, was also the name of the land's war horn and of the man who blew it.

One of the founding cantons

Uri is one of the founding cantons of the Swiss Confederation. Its pact with Schwyz, possibly concluded in 1291 and certainly by 1309, came to be seen as the founding act of the Old Swiss Confederacy. Its capital is Altdorf, and legend has it that William Tell came from Uri.
